Game Making?
When it comes to creating a video game, there has to be a set of rules or ideas that the game will follow in order to become a real project. Depending on the factors that the creator considers important, they will need an engine that is compatible with their ideas to make them come to life.
Engines
These engines can be made by the game developers themselves or they can use ones that already exist. It all depends on the style of the game.
For 2D games, engines like Game Maker, RPG Maker, Adventure Game Studio, and Game Salad are available. Undertale, one of the most popular games of recent years, was made in Game Maker.
For 3D games, Unity, Unreal Engine, and Source would be the most accessible. Another great example of a game would be Life is Strange, which was made in using Unreal Engine.
Assets
Assets refer to the characters, the environments, background music, and sound effects featured.
For 2D games, creators can rely on bitmap graphics or vector images to create anything they need, the most basic form of bitmap usage is pixel art while vector art is based on layers.
For 3D games, one can used something called voxels or 3D models. Voxels are basically three dimensional pixels with volume, sound familiar? That’s because that’s exactly what Minecraft is all about. For the 3D modeling, these are essentially sculptures made with a computer which means that one will need special software to make these.
Sound Design
Foley art is reproducing sounds with everyday objects, this is a key component in developing because it gives sounds more depth than just recording the sound of the real action. For background music, one can compose it themselves or license it from other people.
Level Design
This is exactly what it sounds like, the creator basically maps out exactly how the games will progress throughout the playthrough. If it’s a story-based game they also plan out the cuts from game to scene or anything else that’s important to make the player continue playing.
Uploading Games Onto the Web
People are able to upload their games without much of a hassle through a Digital Distribution Platform. Steam is one of the greatest and most reliable but there’s also Desura, Greenman Gaming, and itch.io. Even though they will take a percentage from profits or fees, they handle order processing, piracy prevention, and automatic updates.
